 | War Crimes
- Took a leading role
in the brutal repression of the Uprising after the Gulf War in 1991, including
mass executions, torture and widespread destruction.
Crimes Against Humanity
- Initiated attacks on
Iraq's civilian population in the southern marshes (against the Shi'as and
Marsh Arabs).
- Involved
in the continuing repression of religious and ethnic minorities including
forced deportation, disappearances and murder.
- Initiated and
supervised a program of prison cleansing, which has resulted in mass arbitrary
executions of prisoners.
- As a member of the National Security
Council, he bears command responsibility for all crimes committed under the
authority or acquiescence of that body.
Genocide
- Initiated the
use of brutal military force against the Marsh Arabs of Southern Iraq as part
of an ongoing campaign against the Shi'as, including the deliberate destruction
of the Marsh Arabs' way of life.
Torture
- As head of the Iraqi internal
security agencies, he is alleged to have permitted and encouraged the endemic
use of torture, including rape and the threat of rape, in Iraq.
