Crimes against humanity
  • Personally participated in the detention and murder of several thousand disappeared male members of the Barzani tribe in 1983.
  • Whilst head of Iraqi intelligence (the Mukhabarat) 1979-1983, responsible for the repression of religious and ethnic minorities including forced deportation, disappearances and murder.
  • Personally supervised the murder of at least six members of the al-Hakim family. Also involved in the arrest of 90 members of the same family.
  • Ordered the assassinations of Iraqi dissidents carried out on foreign soil by Mukhabarat agents.
  • Carried out the destruction of the villages of Dujail and Jezan al-Chol in 1983, and the subsequent murder or deportation of the inhabitants.
  • As Head of Intelligence, he bears command responsibility for permitting and encouraging the systematic use of torture, rape and the threat of rape, by agencies under his control.
